Top-Seeded Bearcats Cut Hawks Season Short

New York, NY – Competing in the Semifinals of the 2007-08 CUNY Athletic Conference women's basketball championship tournament on Wednesday, the fourth-seeded Hunter College Hawks season was cut short as they fell to the top-seeded Baruch College 74-47 at Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of City College of New York.

Hunter got off to a quick start with an 11-2 run and got the Bearcats starters to pick up a couple of early fouls. However, they weren't able to take advantage of their early success as Baruch would go on an 18-8 to claim their first lead of the game with 4:26 left in the half. The Bearcats then closed out the final two minutes of the first half with a 10-1 run to take a 33-24 advantage heading into the intermission. The second half was controlled by Baruch the whole way through, with the young Hawk team making small runs, but not enough to overcome their first half deficit.

Sophomore forward Andrea Buckham (Jamaica, NY/Flushing) led the Hawks with 17 points and 14 rebounds and four steals in her final performance of the season. Freshman guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood), who made just her fourth start of the season, was the only other Hawk to finish in double figures with 12 points and added seven rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

The Bearcats were led by senior forward Dominique McClendon (Chicago, IL/Seaside) who had a game high 20 points and 11 rebounds, while three others finished with ten points each.

The Hawks close out their 2007-08 campaign with a 6-7 conference record and advanced to the semifinals for the first time in two years. Head Coach Vana Loukissas will have a majority of her team back next season as they will lose only three to graduation.
