New York, NY – Sophomore guard
Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) netted a career high 23 points, but it wouldn't be enough as a hungry Vassar squad battled the Hawks to earn just their second victory of the season 79-71 in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.
Vassar opened up the game on fire, taking a 19-6 just a little over six minutes into the half. The Hawks made a run at the end of the half, cutting the lead to a basket, 34-32 with 2:14 left, but Vassar put together a quick run to finish the half with a 42-32 lead.
In the second half, the Hawks made a big run that was completed when junior guard
Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) hit a three-pointer to give the Hawks their first lead since she hit the first basket of the game. However, Vassar brewed up another run, taking a seven point lead on a 9-0 and never looked back.
The Brewers were led by freshman forward Kristyn Tempora (Marlboro, NJ/St. John Vianney) who scored a team high 22 points along with 12 rebounds, while junior forward Emily Haeuser added 20 points and a game high 16 rebounds.
For the Hawks,
Branch El-Vielot scored 18 points and had ten rebounds, while junior forward
Andrea Buckham (Queens, NY/Flushing) also scored 18 points and pulled down nine boards.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, when they host Brooklyn College for a men's & women's CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader with the women tipping off at 5:00 p.m.
