Danbury, CT – Junior guard
Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) scored a game-high 21 points along with six assists and rebounds, but her efforts wouldn't be enough as the Hawks come up short on the road in their season opener to Western Connecticut State, 88-73.
McKenna helped keep the Hawks in the game early, scoring 15 of her 21 points in the first half. However, the Colonials captured an 11 point lead and never looked back, going on to win by 15.
For the Hawks, senior guard
Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) shot 5-of-6 from the field and finished with 15 points, while senior center
Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) added 13 points and five rebounds.
Western Connecticut was led by junior guard Heather Lee (Seymour, CT/Seymour) who had a team high 19 points, followed by junior center Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT/Hamden) with an 18 points, 15 rebounds performance.
On Friday, the Hawks will host the 2009 Hunter Tip-Off Tournament, where they will face Lasell College at 7:00 p.m. In the first game of the tournament, Centenary College will take on Ohio-Wesleyan at 5:00 p.m. with both games taking place at the Hunter Sportsplex.
