Buckham Scores 23 Points in Victory Over CCNY

Box Score

New York, NY – Senior forward Andrea Buckham (Queens, NY/Flushing) scored a season high 23 points to lead the Hawks to a 65-57 victory over The City College of New York in a CUNY Athletic Conference women's basketball game Friday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

In a low scoring first half, the Hawks seemed to have control of the game with a 25-11 lead with 7:45 left on the clock, but CCNY would go on to close out the half with a 19-4 run to take a 30-29 lead. In the second half, the Beavers would extend this lead to six points before the tables turned and the same way they earned the lead, they relinquished it as Hunter reclaimed control of the game with a 14-2 run that spanned almost six minutes. Hunter then closed the game out from the free-throw line to earn their third win of the season.

Junior guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) had yet another solid game for the Hawks, scoring 13 points along with six rebounds and assists, followed by senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) who recorded her fourth consecutive double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds.

For the Beavers, sophomore guard Donika Rexhepi led her team with 14 points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Taryn VanEsselstyn and sophomore guard Simone Tharkur each chipped in 11 points.

Hunter now improves to 3-2 on the season and is 2-0 in the CUNYAC, while CCNY falls to 1-5 and 0-2 in the conference. The Hawks will be back in action on Monday, when they host New York University for a 5:00 p.m. non-conference game at the Sportsplex.
