Box Score
New York, NY – Senior forward
Andrea Buckham (Queens, NY/Flushing) scored a game high 19 points and had her first double-double of the season with 12 rebounds to help the Hawks to a 70-64 double overtime victory over New York University in a non-conference women's basketball game held Monday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.
Tonight's game marks the Hawks first win over New York University since back on February 14, 1983 when they downed the Violets 57-49.
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the game. At the conclusion of the first half, the game had been tied five times and there were seven lead changes, yet both teams stood at 25 each. The Violets were then able to hold a small lead for a good portion of the second half before the Hawks fought back to take a four point lead with 3:43 left to play. Both teams had a chance to break the tie with under 30 seconds left in the game, but were unable to, forcing the extra period.
In a low scoring first overtime period, the Hawks seemed to have control of the game, holding a 54-51 lead with just 2:08 left on the clock. However, a foul from beyond the arc put senior guard Jen Hum-Traverso to the line where she would make all three free-throws to tie the game for the ninth time. Once again, both teams had chances to score with under 30 seconds in the period, but neither could get the advantage and the game was pushed to a second extra period.
Hunter scored the first five points of the second overtime to make it 59-54 with 3:47 left. From there, NYU missed all four of its free-throw attempts, including two on purpose in hopes of producing a quick basket, but did not score again.
Junior guard
Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) netted 16 points in 43 minutes, while senior guard
Deseree Boler (Bronx, NY/Patapsco) added 15 points, shooting 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. For the Violets, seniors Grace Carmen and Hailey Kimball each scored team highs of 12 points.
The Hawks (4-2) will be back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Patchogue, NY for a non-conference game with Saint Joseph's College at 7:00 p.m. The Violets return home on Wednesday when they face New Jersey City University at 6:00 p.m.
