Flushing, NY – In what could seem like a replay of last season, after trailing 2-1 following doubles play, the Hawks would tie things up at four a piece with the match relying on the racket of junior
Bomi Park (Astoria, NY/Younghoon) who lost her first set 6-4, but she would battle it out and take the next two sets 6-3 and 6-0 to give Hunter an important 5-4 victory over rival Baruch College Tuesday evening at the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.
The Hawks only doubles victory was earned by the tandem of Park and junior
Anna Vagner (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), who downed the Bearcats third doubles team 8-0. First and second doubles were both close matches, with senior
Evgeniya Kim (Flushing, NY/Cardozo) and sophomore
Ericka Jaramillo (Jamaica, NY/Townsend Harris) dropping a 9-7 (7-5) match to Baruch's top team. The team of sophomore
Stefanie Smith (Little Neck, NY/Cardozo) and junior
Veronica Efimenko (Belarus/#181) dropped second doubles 9-7.
Things then got interesting as each match finished, starting with fourth singles and Smith falling to Baruch's Mariam Mkrtchyan 6-4, 6-2 to give Baruch a commanding 3-1 lead. However, the match began to shift as Vagner won her third singles match 6-4, 6-1, followed by Efimenko taking second singles 6-3, 6-4 and Kim winning first singles 6-4, 6-1 to put the hawks ahead 4-3.
Baruch then tied the match at 4-4 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory by Alino Bero over Jaramillo at sixth singles, before Park put the match away to keep the Hawks conference win streak alive which now extends to 58 consecutive wins.
Following today's match, the Hawks are now 3-0 over and in the conference, while the Bearcats drop to 3-2 on the year and are 2-1 in the conference. Hunter will be back in action as a team on Tuesday, September 29 when they will be on the road to face N.Y. City Tech.
