McKenna’s 25 Leads Hawks to Overtime Victory At Brooklyn

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY – Junior guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) scored a game high 25 points, shooting 11-of-12 from the free throw line as the Hawks make up for a poor second half by forcing an extra period and then defeating the Brooklyn Bulldogs 69-65 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the West Quad Gymnasium in Brooklyn, NY.

Brooklyn opened the game with a 7-2 run, however the Hawks answered back with a 14-0 run and eventually went up by 13 points with 2:14 left in the half. Then Brooklyn forward Frances Lyons scored seven points to cut Hunter's lead to just six points heading into halftime.

Hunter continued to lead for the first part of the second half before squandering a nine point lead as the Bulldogs look to be in control with a five point lead with a little over four minutes left in the game. Trailing by three points with 1:23 left, senior forward Andrea Buckham (Queens, NY/Flushing) make the game saving play by forcing a steal and then converting the conventional three-point play to tie things up at 57 which is how the scoreboard read at the end of regulation.

The overtime was virtually all Hunter as the Hawks outscored the Bulldogs 12-8. Senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) picked up a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Buckham finished the game with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Hawks now improve to 8-5 on the year and are 3-2 in the CUNYAC, while Brooklyn falls to 9-6 and pickup their first conference loss this season. Hunter will now head back home where they will host Ramapo College for a matinee on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
