New York, NY – Senior guard
Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) had her best performance of the season, scoring 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds, leading a late rally that erased a 13 point deficit, but it would be the Roadrunners of Ramapo College who walk away with a 64-62 win in a non-conference women's basketball game Monday afternoon at the Hunter Sportsplex.
In a low scoring first half, each team held small leads before the game was tied at 27 with 2:27 remaining on the clock. Ramapo then took a 29-27 lead with 1:59 left and that is how it would stand at halftime.
Ramapo added to their lead with an 11-0 run in the second half to go up 50-37 with 9:07 left in regulation. However, the Hawks were able to ride a 23-10 run to tie the game at 60 with just 41 seconds on the clock. A little under 20 seconds later, Ramapo guard Stephanie Cannizzaro completed a three-point play after hitting a jumper and a free-throw to give her team a 63-60 lead. Freshman guard
Johanna Keilwitz (Wolmirstedt, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle) answered back with a basket with nine seconds left to bring the Hawks to within one point, 63-62. A trip to the line would put the Roadrunners up 64-62, with Hunter having the final play of the game, but with five seconds left, they weren't able to get a good shot off before the final buzzer sounded.
