Branch El-Vielot Leads Shorthanded Hawks Past York

New York, NY – Senior guard Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) tied a career high of 20 points to lead a shorthanded Hawk squad past York College 67-62 in CUNY Athletic Conference women's Basketball action Wednesday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Following a couple of early lead changes, junior guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) hit a layup with 11:59 on the clock to put the Hawks up 13-12. Hunter then extended the lead to 23-16 following a quick 6-0 run that spanned just 20 seconds. They would go up by nine, 27-18 with 6:24 left before York was able to cut the lead down to 37-32 heading into the intermission.

The game began to pick up in the second half as York was able to capture three leads, including a 44-42 advantage with 12:28 left to go in regulation. It wouldn't take long however for the Hawks to reclaim the lead scoring the game's next six points. At this point, Hunter was in control of the game as they never trailed again, despite York cutting the lead to just two points on two occasions. York's final chance came with 31 seconds left following a free throw from junior forward Niya Jarvis that brought the score to 64-62. Hunter then iced the game at the line with senior guard Deseree Boler (Bronx, NY/Patapsco) hitting two free throws to put her team up 66-62 with 21 ticks left in the game.

Hunter played just seven players in tonight's game, with all seven scored at least three points. McKenna had a nice outing with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, while Boler and junior guard Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, NY/Far Rockaway) each added ten points. Senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) would end up with a team high 11 rebounds and also had eight points in just 18 minutes of action off the bench.

For the Cardinals, junior guard Maimouna Dabo scored a team high 17 points, followed by junior guard Elizabeth Padilla with ten points. Sophomore forward Kadisha Wickham pulled down a game high 12 rebounds and scored nine points for York.

Hunter (9-6, 4-2 CUNYAC) will be back at home on Friday, when they are scheduled to host the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (7-8, 5-1 CUNYAC) for a 5:00 p.m. game.
