Stewartson’s Unique Double-Double Leads Hawks Past Medgar Evers

Box Scores

New York, NY – Senior guard Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, NY/Far Rockaway) not only scored a new career high of 24 points, but also completed a unique double-double with 12 steals which ties the all-time single game high in the program's history to lead the Hawks to a 69-48 victory over Medgar Evers in CUNY Athletic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Stewartson now joins Benita McNair and Lelia Stewart in Hunter's record books for most steals in a game. McNair set the initial record against Saint Elizabeth on January 31, 1984, and Stewart matched her high against Washington of Maryland on November, 19, 1993.

The Cougars scored the game's first points a few seconds into the game and then following a basket from the Hawks, took a 4-2 lead with 17:59 on the clock. This however would be their final lead of the game as the Hawks switched to a full court press, scored eight unanswered points and never looked back. Hunter held a 30-23 lead at the half, and would go on to take a 24 point advantage with 3:39 left in the game before finishing with up with the 21 point win.

Junior guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) had an outstanding game, scoring 23 points and helped contribute to a couple of Stewartson's seven assists. Senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) was next in line with seven points and a team high five rebounds.

As a team, the Hawks forced 44 turnovers that would result in 41 points. They also scored 18 fast break points and 40 points in the paint as opposed to Medgar Evers' 22 points in the paint and zero points on turnovers.

The Cougars offense was led by sophomore center Tiffany Thompson who had 18 points and a game high 21 rebounds, followed by senior forward Shakimba Pierre with 15 points and ten rebounds.

Hunter (11-7, 6-2 CUNYAC) will now head down Lexington Avenue on Friday for a rematch with long-time rival Baruch College (15-4, 8-0 CUNYAC) in the first game of a CUNYAC doubleheader with the women playing at 5:30 p.m. and the men tipping off at 8:00 p.m.
