Queens, New York - On Saturday, October 30 at the Metropolitan Oval, the Hawks faced the Cardinals of York College in the semifinal round of the CUNYAC playoffs. After a scoreless first half, senior Aykut Can netted what proved to be the game winning goal to advance his team to the CUNYAC/Applebee's Soccer Championship.
During the first half, each team was evenly matched both on the offensive and defensive ends; York had six shots compared to the Hawks' five and neither team could capitalize on any opportunties. Heading into the second 45 minutes of play, Hunter came out fired up and pressured their counterparts as they outshot them 13 to seven. York keeper, despite making eight saves on the night, gave up one shot to Aykut Can who fired the ball from 30 yards out to find the back of the net, giving Hunter a 1-0 lead heading into the 78th minute.
Zade Haobsh (four saves) and the Hawk defense held on for the remaining 12 minutes and hold York scoreless, recording the sixth shutout of the season.
The Hawks will play in the CUNYAC/Applebee's Soccer Championship on Saturday, November 6 at the Metropolitan Oval where they will take on the Lightning of Lehman College. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
