New York, NY - On Friday and Saturday, November 19 and 20, the women's basketball hosted the Tip Off Tournament which featured Albright College, Bridgewater State University and New Jersey City University. The two-day event featured four games with Friday's winners playing each other on Saturday for the championship game and the consolation game following. The Hawks edged NJCU 54-49 to advance to the championship where they fell to BSU 80-54.
In the opening game of the tournament, the Hawks got on the board first as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead sparked by a laybup by Johanna Keilwitz and a Kristen Marcoe three pointer to follow it up. The Gothic Knights fought hard to get back into it as they tied the score at nine at the 7:23 mark. However, the tie was short lived as the Hawks quickly regained the lead and, with the help of a late half surge, headed into halftime with a 10 point advantage.
Opening up the second half, Hunter came out firing as they went on a 13-2 run in the first 5:24, putting NJCU in a 21 point deficit. The Gothic Knights didn't give up and slowly made their way back into the game, pulling within four points with 2:08 left on the clock. The late heroics fell just short as the Hawks managed to hold off their counterparts 54-49 to notch their first win of the season.
Nicole Lenard and Maxine Kaminski shared a game high of 20 points for their respective teams while Keilwitz chipped in with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Markoe recording 17 rebounds.
On Saturday, the championship stage was set as the Hawks took on the Bears of Bridgewater State, who beat Albright on Friday, 81-74. BSU held the Hawks scoreless in the first 4:28 of play as they jumped out to an early 13-0 lead. Keilwitz drained a three pointer to get her team up on the board, but Hunter would fall further behind before heading into halftime down 17 points. As they did in the first half, the Bears opened up the second half with a 21-2 run that lasted just over five minutes. The Hawks struggled to knock down shots as they shot just 31.7% from the field and could not climb out of the hole they were in from the first half. BSU would go on to win by a score of 80-54.
Markoe posted a game high of 25 points and 12 rebounds while Lenard chipped in with 13 points and five boards.
