New York, NY – On Tuesday, November 30, the women's basketball team traveled across Manhattan to take on the Bloodhounds of John Jay in the first conference match up of the season. Despite controlling the entire first half, the Hawks faltered in the late minutes of the game, giving way to John Jay as the were held off by a score of 60-56. With the loss, Hunter falls to 1-4, 0-1 CUNYAC while the Bloodhounds move to 1-3, 1-0 CUNYAC.
The CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, Nicole Lenard, got the Hawks on the board first with a layup which was followed up by a three pointer and two made free throws by Shamar Stewartson, giving her team a 7-0 lead. Hunter would remain in the lead and out distance themselves by as much as 13 points with 12:15 left to play, but they chipped away to erase the deficit and backed by eight points by Jamecia Forsythe, pulled within two as the first 20 minutes came to a close.
Unlike the first half, it was the Bloodhounds that took the lead in the second half and never relinquished it. Hunter fell behind by nine on three separate occasions, but battled back to pull within six with just under two minutes left to play. Back to back free throws by Stewartson and Marta Banach pulled the Hawks within four. Stewartson knocked down a layup with 24 seconds left to make it a two point game, but a foul sent Allana Beddoe to the charity stripe where she connected on two of her shots, putting the game out of reach.
Stewartson led all scorers with an impressive 35 points while Lenard and Johanna Keilwitz chipped in with 11 and 10 rebounds respectively. The Bloodhounds had six women in double digits in scoring with Dominique Grice leading the way with 16.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, December 3 when they host the Lightning of Lehman College during Homecoming. The game is scheduled to start at 5:30pm.
