Box Score

Middletown, CT – On Saturday, December 11, the women's basketball team took on the Cardinals of Wesleyan University in a non-conference meeting. After an evenly played first half, the Hawks faltered down the stretch in the final minutes of the second half, eventually falling by a score of 57-42. With the loss, Hunter drops to 3-6, 1-1 in conference play, while the Cardinals advance to 5-2.

The Hawks got on the board first with a Marta Banach jumper, which was followed up with a field goal by fellow freshman, Kristen Markoe to start the game off. Hunter led for most of the first half with a lead reaching as much as six points at the 11:35 mark. However, with just under five minutes to go, a free throw shot by Amber Wessells put the Cardinals up by one to take the lead for the first time. A late shot by Emily Lippe with 26 seconds to go gave Wesleyan a four point lead heading into halftime.

Erin Gold broke the 2:22 scoring drought on a made jumper as neither team on their respective four possessions each were able to put points on the board. At 9:53, the deficit in which the Hawks faced grew to 10, but Shamar Stewartson and Johanna Keilwitz brought the team back to within three with just over eight minutes left to play. Unfortunately, they would get no closer as the Cardinals advanced their lead to 12 and tacked on another three more in the final seconds of the game to put it out of reach, serving Hunter their sixth loss of the year.

Stewartson led all comers with 17 points and five rebounds while Markoe, Banach, and Nicole Lenard each chipped in with five boards as well. Johanna Keilwitz recorded seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Hawks return to action on December 29 when they host William Patterson at the Hunter Sportsplex. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.
