New York, NY - On Friday night, December 3, the Hawks hosted the Lightning of Lehman College in a CUNY Athletic Conference match up during Homecoming. Lehman posted an impressive 40 points in the first 20 minutes of play, but the Hawks responded by holding off a late surge, winning by two points on free throws in the final 1.5 seconds of the game. With the win, Hunter moves to 2-4, 1-1 CUNYAC while Lehman drops to 4-3, 1-1 CUNYAC.
The Hawks jumped out to an early eight point lead, just four and a half minutes into the game. They held the margin for another seven minutes until the Lightning's Amanda De La Cruz converted on a free throw after a made layup for the three point play, at 12:37, bringing the game within seven. A three pointer by Paula Robinson gave her team the lead, 26-25 with 7:27 left to play, but the Hawks stayed within reach thanks to a late layup by freshman Nicole Leonard with 23 seconds left, to make it a 40-38 game heading into overtime.
In the second half, the Lightning controlled the scoreboard for the opening seven and a half minutes until a
Marta Banach layup sparked a 7-0 Hunter run. The Hawks would go ahead as high as eight points which came with 1:19 to play, forcing Lehman to pick up their offense in an attempt to close the gap with time winding down.
A free throw shot by Paula Robinson with 1:11 left to go gave Lehman the momentum they needed to score eight unanswered points to tie the game with four seconds left.
Kristen Markoe grabbed the rebound off of a missed shot by Louvinia Hayes and then was immediately fouled by Maquashia Campbell, sending her to the line with 1.5 seconds to go. Markoe sunk both shots and time ran out with the score 76-74 in favor of the Hawks.
Senior
Shamar Stewartson led all scorers with a game high of 22 points while Hayes posted 21. The Hawks had three other scorers in double digits; Lenard with 16, Banach with 14 and Markoe with 13.
The Hawks return to action on Monday, December 6 when they play visitor to Ramapo College. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.
