Mahwah, NJ – On Monday night, December 6, the women's basketball team played against the Roadrunners of Ramapo in a non conference match up. The Hawks came out firing in the first half, connecting on 15 of 32 from the field and held a 10 point lead heading into halftime. However, they lost their rhythm, struggled to sink shots and their lead turned into a deficit as they eventually fell by a score of 70-57. With the loss Hunter moves to 2-5, 1-1 CUNYAC while the Roadrunners move to 6-1.
A quick foul by freshman Marta Banach sent Tiffany Osorio to the charity stripe as she made both free throw attempts, getting her team on the board first. A three pointer by Lindsey Gripenburg put the Hawks down by five early in the game, but back to back three pointers by Shamar Stewartson and Kristen Markoe quickly closed the gap.
At the 11:19 mark, an offensive rebound and put back by Christina Baker gave her team the lead and for the rest of the half, they never looked back. The Hawk's margin grew to as much as 12 points, but would end the half up by 10 on the strength of 46.9 percent shooting from the field, and connecting on seven of 13 three point attempts.
Ramapo opened up the second half with a 10-2 run in the first 5:15 minutes to tie the game at 41 apiece. A made jumper by Alexa Ryan sparked a 16-2 run that set the Hawks back 15 points with just under five minutes to go. Hunter was having trouble connecting on shots as they made just five field goals in the second half from 33 attempts. The deficit proved too much to come back from as Hunter couldn't close the gap and eventually lost 70-57.
Faith Flannery led all scorers with 19 points while Stewartson led the Hawks with 18. Freshman Kristen Markoe chipped in with 12 points and 13 boards while Nicole Lenard recorded 12 points and 12 rebounds on the night.
The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, December 8 when they travel to Newark, New Jersey to take on Rutgers-Newark. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start.
