Whyms Records Triple-Double in Comeback Win Over John Jay

Box Score

New York, NY – Senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) joined an elite group of Hawks after dominating the Bloodhounds with her first-career triple-double, scoring 13 points, ripping down 25 rebounds and blocking 11 shots to lead the Hawks to a comeback victory over John Jay College on Friday night at the Doghouse.

Whyms' 25 rebounds sets a new program single-game high and her 11 blocks shatters the previous single-game record of eight recorded by Barbara Flowers against New Paltz on January 12, 1983.

Junior guard Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, NY/Far Rockaway) helped erase an eight point first half deficit by scoring 15 of her game high 17 points, while dishing out five assists. Senior guard Branch El-Vielot, Shay (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) scored 13 points, pulled down seven rebounds and had five steals.

Hunter now improves to 14-9 on the year and 9-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference, while the Bloodhounds fall to 0-24 on the year and 0-12 in the conference. The Hawks will close out CUNYAC play on Sunday, when they head uptown to face the City College of New York at 2:00 p.m. in the remake of Wednesday's game that was snowed out.
