New York, NY – Senior guard
Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) scored 12 of her game high 20 points in the second half to lead the Hawks to 71-62 victory over the City College of New York, clinching the second seed and will host CCNY on Sunday in the quarterfinal round of the 2009-10 CUNY Athletic Conference Championship Tournament.
After opening the game with a 19-3 run, the Hawks would squander their lead and allowed the Beavers to tie the game with 1:25 left in the half. Then trailing by four points with 4:45 left, the Hawks used a 15-2 run to close out the game and grab the victory.
Senior center
Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) recorded her 12th double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 14 rebounds, while blocking six shots and forcing five steals. Senior guard
Deseree Boler (Bronx, NY/Patapsco) had her best game of the season, scoring 17 points along with a game high six steals. Senior guard
Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, NY/Far Rockaway) rounded out the Hawks scoring with 11 points and dished out a game high eight assists.
Hunter (15-9, 10-3 CUNYAC) will closed out the regular season on Tuesday, when they head to Hoboken, NJ to face Stevens Institute of Technology for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
