Stewartson & Whyms Lead Hawks Past Lightning

New york, NY – Junior guard Shamar Stewartson (Springfield Gardens, NY/Far Rockaway) scored a game high 22 points, while senior center Juanita Whyms (Far Rockaway, NY/Stella Maris) finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds to the Hawks to a big conference win over Lehman College, 67-51 on Friday night at the Hunter Sportsplex.

Hunter dominated early on, outscoring Lehman 8-2 in the game's first five minutes and later took a 24-8 lead with 7:23 left to play. The Lightning then used a 9-0 to cut the lead to seven before Stewartson hit a layup to give Hunter a 26-17 lead heading into the intermission.

Lehman center Dorothy Hunte opened the second half with two quick baskets that was part of a 6-0 run to bring her team to within just three points, 26-23. This was as close as the Lightning got in the second half and the Hawks went on a 12-0 run to claim a 15-point, 38-23 advantage with 13:35 left in the game. Hunter later ran the lead up to 25 points, 56-31 before finishing with the 67-51 victory.

Hunter's top three scorers were the only individual on the team to score a point until senior guard Shay Branch El-Vielot (Cambria Heights, NY/Canarsie) sank a three-pointer with 9:22 left in the second half. Junior guard Megan McKenna (Rockaway, NY/Midwood) was a part of the team's top three, scoring 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Stewartson also finished with four steals and four assits, while shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-4 from downtown.

Lehman guard Melissa St. Louis finishing with a team high 13 points, shooting 8-of-10 from the free throw line, while senior guard Barbara Febus added 12 points and junior forward Leslie Mencia scored ten points.

Tonight's victory moves Hunter (13-9, 8-3 CUNYAC) into second place in the CUNYAC behind the unbeaten Baruch College. The Hawks will look to maintain their position when they return to action on Wednesday, facing The City College of New York (8-14, 4-7 CUNYAC) for the 5:00 p.m. game of a conference doubleheader at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
