After 90 minutes of regulation, the score remained knotted at zero. In the final minutes of the second overtime period, Mario Baez beat the keeper for the game winning goal and gave the Hawks a 1-0 win. The victory advances Hunter to 2-1 while the Rams fall to 1-3.
During regulation, both squads fought hard and were evenly matched throughout the game. Hunter out-shot the Rams 8-7 while Farmingdale had six opportunities off corners compared to the Hawks' one. In the 71st minute, the Rams got called for a foul which allowed junior midfielder, Danny Vera a penalty kick. The attempt headed toward the left side of the goal, but was stopped by goalie Ricky Meschkow.
Deadlocked at zero, the two teams headed into the first overtime looking for the golden goal. Alex Mendiola had an opportunity to win the game for the Rams, but keeper Zade Haobsh came up with a big save to keep the Hawks in it. The second overtime began and in the last two minutes, just as it looked as if it would end a tie game, the Hawks got the ball down field with Anthony Intrabartolo in control of the ball. He fired a shot but it was blocked by a defender. Baez picked up the rebound and sailed the ball into the net for the win.
The Hawks return to action this weekend when they head up to Annondale-on-Hudson on Saturday and Sunday to take part in the Bard Tournament. The games will be at 4:00 pm and 3:00 pm respectively.
