New York, NY – On Tuesday night, the women's basketball team traveled down to NYU to take on the Violets in a non conference match up. The Hawks got off to a slow start and despite outscoring their counterparts by thirteen points in the second half, could not come away with the win as they fell by a score of 74-54. With the loss, Hunter drops to 4-10, 2-2 CUNYAC while NYU advances to 7-5.
The Hawks struggled to get on the board as they could not create scoring opportunities or find the bottom of the net for over seven minutes. The Violets took advantage of this and put the Hawks in a 19 point deficit that grew as much as 37 at one point thanks to connecting on almost half of their field goal attempts.
A made free throw by Marta Banach to open the second half sparked a 9-2 Hunter run, slightly closing the gap. Backed by improved shooting, 35 percent compared to .176 in the first half, the Hawks continued to slowly claw away at the deficit, pulling within 17 with 5:44 left to play in the game. However, that's as close as they would get as time ran down in favor of the Violets.
Shamar Stewartson led the Hawks with 15 points while freshman Nicole Lenard posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Cara Bonia led NYU with a game high of 20 points.
The Hawks are back in action on Friday, January 14 when they host Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC matchup. The game is slated for a 5:00 pm start.
