New York, NY - On Friday night, January 14, the women's basketball team played host to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College in a conference matchup. After leading by four at the half, late free throws with eight seconds remaining put the game out of reach for the Hawks as they fell by a score of 60-54. With the loss, Hunter slips to 4-11, 2-3 CUNYAC while Brooklyn advances to 8-5, 4-1 CUNYAC.
The Hawks came out firing on all cylinders and opened up the game with a 5-0 run, sparked by a Kristen Markoe three pointer which was followed up by fellow freshman Nicole Lenard scoring on a made jumper. Building on the early five point margin, Hunter extended their lead to six with 12:37 left, but an 11-0 Bulldog run set them back by five with just over eight minutes to play. Backed by 9 of 23 shooting from the field and a layup by senior Shamar Stewartson with just under a minute to go, Hunter headed into halftime with the score in their favor, 54-20.
Just as in the first half, the Hawks controlled the score board for a majority of the second half, falling behind after 13 plus minutes of leading. At the 7:05 mark, a three pointer by Ashley Allen changed the momentum of the game as the Bulldogs went out in front by two. The Hawks kept it close until 2:17 and then trailed by seven, but pulled within one thanks to a three pointer by Lenard and a converted three point play by Markoe. However, down the final one minute stretch, the Bulldogs connected on a jumper from Justine O'Callahan and then sunk three shots in a row from the charity stripe to put the game out of reach and steal the win.
Markoe tied the game high with 19 points and also posted eight rebounds in the loss. Lenard chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds while Stewartson tallied 13 points and six assists. Ariel Smith put up 19 points while teammate O'Callahan score 18 and pulled down 16 rebounds
