New York, NY – The women's basketball team played host to the Yellow Jackets of City Tech tonight in a conference meeting. After a strong showing in the first 20 minutes of the game, the Hawks scored an impressive 41 points in the second half while holding the Yellow Jackets to just 17 as they cruised to a 76-43 victory. With the win, Hunter moves to 6-11, 4-3 CUNYAC while City Tech falls to 3-14, 1-6 CUNYAC.
A Layup by Kimberly Battle put the Yellow Jackets on the board first, but a combination of tough defense and good shooting, sparked by a three pointer by Kristen Markoe, resulted in a 14-0 Hunter. The Hawks would see their lead grow to as much as 18 thanks to the freshman duo of Markoe and Nicole Lenard, who combine for 20 of Hunter's 35 points and a team field goal percentage of 44.8 percent. However, City Tech began to surge back, closing the gap to nine by then end of the half, outscoring their counterparts 16-7 in the final 7:44.
As the second half got underway, the Hawk's lead began to increase their lead slowly as it turned from seven to as much as 33 by the end of the game. Connecting on over 50 percent of shots from the field (26-28), Hunter went on a 18-2 run that lasted just over six minutes and gave them a 60-36 lead. Their defense was equally as impressive as they held City Tech to just eight of 31 from the field and caused 25 turnovers in the game. A layup off the hands of Danique Love only patched the deficit temporarily, as the Hawks continued to pour on the pressure, extending their lead until the final minutes where two late buckets from the charity stripe by Shamel Jaime capped a 76-43 win.
Markoe led all comers with 22 points and 17 rebounds while Lenard and Shamar Stewartson each chipped in with 15 points a piece. Also chipping in was senior Christina Baker posted nine points and pulled down five rebounds while freshman Marta Banach scored seven while grabbing six boards. Erica Simon led the Yellow Jackets with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Hawks are back in action on Monday, January 24 when they play host to Richard Stockton at 5:00 pm.
