Hawks Fall to Richard Stockton

Box Score

New York, NY – The women's basketball team played host to the Ospreys of Richard Stockton in a non conference matchup tonight. After falling behind early on, and staying within striking distance of the Ospreys, the Hawks fell behind in the final minutes of the first half and could not recover from the 11 point deficit, ultimately falling by a score of 72-53. With the loss, Hunter drops to 6-12, 4-3 CUNYAC while Richard Stockton advances to 12-5, 5-1 NJAC.

A quick layup by Che'Na Thompson from the tip off got things going for the Ospreys, but Hunter responded with a steal and jumper by freshman Kristen Markoe. Staying within six, the Hawks took the lead for the first, and only time of the game at the 7:39 mark when senior Shamar Stewartson nailed a shot from behind the arc, making it a 22-20 game. In the final three minutes, sparked by a Thompson layup, the Ospreys added 14 points compared to Hunter's three, giving themselves an 11 point cushion heading into the half, 38-27.

A three pointer by Markoe after a Julia Fagan layup kept the Hawks within 10 to start the second half, but they slowly began to fade, letting the deficit grow to as much as 16 points at the 13:44 mark. However, they strung together an 11-4 run to cut the lead down to nine with just over six and a half minutes left to play, but it's as close as they would get. The Hawks would struggle down the last three minutes as the Ospreys surged yet again to take a 72-53 win.

The Hawks had three in double digit scoring led by freshman Nicole Lenard with 16, Markoe with 15 points to compliment her 15 rebounds, and Stewartson adding 13 of her own. Fagan, Thompson and Aspen Price-Perry all scored in the double digits as well for Richard Stockton.

The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, January 26 when they travel to Queens to take on fellow conference foe, the Cardinals of York College. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm.
