Brooklyn, NY - On Wednesday night, the women's basketball team traveled to Medgar Evers College to take on the Cougars in a conference matchup. From the start, the Hawks dominated their fellow conference rival as they lead the entire game to win by a 38 margin, 73-35. With the win, the Hawks move to 5-11, 3-3 CUNYAC while Medgar Evers drops to 3-12, 0-6 CUNYAC.
A minute into the game, a layup by Senior Guard Christina Baker put the Hawks on the board first. At the 16:16 mark, Nicole Lenard was fouled after an attempt from behind the arc which resulted in three attempts from the charity stripe and connected on all three. It was the spark the Hawks needed to continue to pour on the pressure, extending their lead by as much as 20 thanks to a 10-1 run in the final 3:38 to head into the locker room up 36-16.
In the second half, the Hawks continued to soar, outscoring the cougars by 18. Gradually, they increased their lead on the strength of 14 of 31 shooting from the field and connecting on four of nine from behind the arc. The Cougars didn't seem to have an answer as they eventually fell by 38 points to remain winless in conference action.
Markoe had a team high of 22 points and 15 rebounds while teammate Lenard finished the night with 21 points and 3 rebounds. Forward Martha Banach scored 8 points and grabbed 5 rebounds and senior guard Kimberly Bailey had a team high of 4 steals.
The Hawks return to action on Friday, January 21st when they play host to the New York City College of Technology in a conference match-up. The game is scheduled to start at 5pm.
