Hawks Grounded by Stevens

Hoboken, NJ – On Monday night, the women's basketball team took on the Ducks of Stevens Institute of Technology in a non conference game. After falling behind early on in the first half, the Hawks couldn't manage to get within striking distance of the Ducks despite a stronger second half. With the loss, Hunter drops to 3-8, 1-1 CUNYAC while Stevens moves to 8-1, 1-0 Empire 8.

The Ducks got the game started off with a 7-0 run before freshman Kristen Markoe notched the first basket for the Hawks. For the ensuing three minutes, both teams struggled to get a basket until senior Shamar Stewartson broke the silence with a made jumper. The Ducks put together a 24-3 run before Hunter scored five late points in the last minute of the game, heading into halftime down 31-12.

In the second 20 minutes, Hunter came out much stronger, improving on their shooting both from the field and from behind the arc. Despite improving, Stevens continued to press on, getting 31 chances from the field and connecting on 11 of them and knocking down four of 10 from three point range. The Ducks outscored the Hawks in the second half, 30-25 en route to the win.

Kristen Markoe led the Hawks with 11 points and six rebounds while Johanna Keilwitz chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds. Jillian Barrett led all comers with 12 points while Isaura Guzman added 10 points of her own.

The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, January 5 when they travel across town to take on the Beavers of CCNY in their third CUNYAC game of the season. The game is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start.
