NEW YORK, NY – Lehman College used an early second half goal and thwarted several of Hunter College's late attempts to secure a 2-1 CUNY Athletic Conference victory over the Hawks on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Hawks drop to 3-7-3 (2-2-4 CUNYAC) while the Lightening improves to 8-4 (6-1 CUNYAC) with the win.
Hunter wasted little time getting on the board in the first stanza, doing so at the 5:33 mark as
Mario Rojas connected on a penalty kick following a foul in the penalty area to put the Hawks in front, 1-0.
Lehman retaliated shortly thereafter as Will Arbieto-Lopez headed Oumar Niang's cross past an outstretched
Zade Haobsh in the 14
th minute to even the score, 1-1. Despite five shots by Lehman and three attempts from Hunter, the score remained tied heading into the break.
Hunter turned the offensive pressure up in the second half, outshooting the Lightening, 9-5 however Lehman notched the crucial go-ahead goal. In the 57
th minute, Niang scored on Thaddeus Ikwuka's throw in to give the Lightening a 2-1 advantage.
The lightening committed 24 fouls in the game, including a pair of yellow cards for Luiz Lopez which resulted in the defender being sent off with a red card in the 87
th minute. The Hawks were unable to capitalize on the one-man advantage, and saw a late attempt off a corner kick in the 89
th minute fall short.
Rojas paced the Hawks, finishing the day with a goal and four shots, including two attempts on goal. Haobsh earned five saves.
The Hawks welcome College of Staten Island to Randall's Island this Saturday, October 15 at 5 pm for the final home contest of the season.
