BOX SCORE
MASPETH, NY - The fifth-seeded Hunter College men's soccer team connected on a critical penalty kick midway through the second half to upset the number four seed John Jay College, 1-0 in the CUNYAC / Applebee's Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal this evening at the Metropolitan Oval.
Senior
Danny Vera proved to be the Hawks' hero as he scored the lone goal on a penalty kick in the 68th minute, following a Rafi Mashirqi handball in the Bloodhounds' box.
The Hawks prevailed despite being outshot, 10-9, and took one less corner kick than the Bloodhounds who struck four to Hunter's three, thanks in large part to
Zade Haobsh's work between the pipes. The senior came up big for the Hawks in goal, registering five crucial saves to preserve the shutout victory.
The victory advances Hunter to the semifinals where they will meet the top-seeded Lehman Lightening on Saturday, October 29th at 11 am. The semifinals will be played on the College of Staten Island campus.
