BROOKLYN, NY—The Hunter College women's tennis team suffered the first loss of the 2011 season on Thursday afternoon, ending a 103-match winning streak as Brooklyn College edged the Hawks, 6-3.
The win improves Brooklyn to 7-2 on the year and 4-0 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. Hunter falls to 5-1 on the year and in conference action, dropping a spot below Brooklyn in the CUNYAC standings.
Flavia Guidi and Jennifer Kraham bested BC's tandem Yuliya Orkis and Liana Rivkin, 8-3 to claim the Hawks' only doubles win. Brooklyn College would take control from there with Maria Sanz and Norma Chabbott defeating Stephanie Ahwering and Gina Yeo, with a comeback and 7-2 tiebreaker victory. The third doubles match also went to Brooklyn College as Janice Shen and Gianna Gelosi beat Lumi Chan and Olga Chagin, 8-3.
Brooklyn College kept Hunter off balance in singles play but Kraham and Yeo proved to be bright spots with two hard-fought wins for the Hawks. After losing the first set, 6-3, Kraham rallied to beat Rivkin 6-3 before taking the tie breaker 10-1 to earn the victory. Similarly in flight #4, Yeo beat Sanz, 7-6 in the first set before slipping, 6-2 in the second before the freshman earned the 7-1 win in the tiebreak.
The Bulldogs would dominate the remainder of singles play with Guidi falling to Orkis in flight #1 (6-2, 6-1), Ahwering dropping to Shen (6-4, 7-5) in flight #3 while Arielle Zieff fell to Chabbott (6-0, 6-4) in #5. Finally, Gelosi beat Chan in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 in #6, accounting for Brooklyn's 6-3 win.
The Brooklyn College Women's Tennis Team accomplished what no other CUNYAC team could do in over a decade as they defeated Hunter 6-3 on Thursday afternoon ending the Hawks 103-match winning streak. The streak dates back to the 2000 season, and includes 82 consecutive regular season wins, as Staten Island was the last team to beat Hunter in league play.
The Hawks will look to rebound next Monday, October 10 when they take on Baruch College at 10 am. Hunter will also play St. Joseph's College – Long Island at 3:30 pm, both matches will be played at the Courts at York College.
