NEW YORK, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent used a late 6-0 run to drop the Hunter College women's basketball team, 61-55 at the Hunter Sportsplex on Thursday evening.
Hunter fallss to 3-7 with tonight's loss while the Dolphins improve to 3-4 on the year.
The Hawks were led by sophomore Nicole Lenard who finished with a game-high 18 points adding seven rebounds and freshman Shatira Hamlet chipped in 12 points and collected six boards. Graduate student Megan McKenna rounded out the Hawks' top scorers with a double-double performance, scoring 11 points in addition to grabbing 12 rebounds.
Following a back and forth affair in the early stages of the first half which featured a combined 35 turnovers, Hunter finally settled down and took a 35-30 lead into the break.
The Hawks came out energized in the second half, establishing a 10 point lead at the 14:17 mark (45-35) but the Dolphins would battle back manufacturing a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to tie the game up at 49-49 with 10:13 left to play. The Dolphins maintained control of the ballgame at 4:16 with a two point advantage (55-53) over the Hawks. A scoring drought ensued until the 2:40 mark when Kristen Markoe connected on a pair of free throws to knot the contest at 55-55 for the seventh tie of the night.
The Dolphins held the Hawks scoreless in the final 2:37 of the game and converted three layups late to earn the comeback victory.
The Hawks were plagued by shooting woes early, finishing the game just 30.8% from the field and 15.4% from behind the arc but were 52.4% from the charity stripe.
Hunter returns to CUNYAC competition on Friday, January 6th when they play host to Baruch College at 6pm.
