New York, NY - On Wednesday, February 9 the women's basketball team played host to CCNY at the Hunter Sportsplex for conference match up. Behind double digit scoring efforts from freshmen guards
Kristen Markoe and
Nicole Lenard, the Hawks held off a late rally from the Beavers to record their sixth conference win on the year by a score of 51-46. With the win, the Hawks improve to 9-14 (6-5 CUNYAC) while CCNY falls to 4-20 (2-10 CUNYAC).
The Hawks' freshman duo teamed up to score the team's first 10 points, but it was CCNY who led by five at the 11 minute mark. Later in the half, a pair of layups by Hunter forward Marta Banach on either side of the 5 minute mark would give the Hawks a seven point lead at 20-13, their biggest of the half. A CCNY layup in the final seconds of the half saw the lead cut to four as the teams entered the locker room with the Hawks up 24-20.
The Hawks opened the second half with a 10-0 run as Markoe and Lenard took over once again. A Lenard layup at the 14:44 mark gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the game at 40-24. The lead would remain in double digits until a three-pointer by CCNY's Donika Rexhepi with 4:25 remaining made it a 7 point contest at 46-39. That three helped spark an 11-0 CCNY run as they pulled within one point with just over two minutes remaining. The next trip down the floor, however, Markoe would hit a clutch jumper from the foul line to put the Hawks up 48-45. A few stops and three free throws by sophomore Johanna Keilwitz sealed the game for the Hawks, who claimed the 51-46 victory.
The Hawks are next in action on Friday, February 11 when the take on Baruch at the Hunter Sportsplex. The game is scheduled to tip off at 5 PM.haw
