Box Score
New York, NY – On Friday, February 11, the women's basketball team played host to arch rivals Baruch College in their final home contest of the season. After playing their rivals even for the first five minutes, the Bearcats slowly opened up a lead that reached double digits and remained in control through the first 20 minutes. Coming out of halftime down 11, the Hawks, despite a combine 45 points from the duo of freshman Kristen Markoe and Nicole Lenard and junior Johanna Keilwitz, the effort was simply not enough as they would get no closer than within 10 points as Baruch powered through the end of the game, winning by a score of 80-61. With the loss, Hunter drops to 9-15, 6-6 CUNYAC while the Bearcats advance to 20-4, 13-0 CUNYAC.
At the 16:43 mark, a pass by Lenard found a wide open Christina Baker who drained a shot from 10 feet out to knot the game at seven a piece. The Bearcats responded on a layup from Megan Bouwens on a feed from Monique Salmon to start a 9-0 run and go ahead, building on a lead in which they would control for the duration of the game. Markoe's first half efforts of 16 points and seven rebounds attempted to keep her team in the game, but Regina Washington and Camille Voitot's combine 25 points put a damper on the Hunter charge to get back in the game. The Hawks would head into halftime down 44-33.
Hunter, who struggled from the field in the first half, continued to fight to get back in the game, was not able to hit their stride. Impressive Bearcat shooting, (52.5 percent from the field) aided them as they saw their lead grow to as much as 23 points at one time in the second half. As the seconds ticked away, Hunter couldn't find a rhythm or catch a break as they shot just 31.6 percent from the field and struggled to knock down shots from behind the arc as they saw Baruch coast toward the end and suffering their sixth conference loss of the season.
Markoe was the game's high scorer and rebounder with 19 and 12 respectively while Lenard and Keilwitz chipped in with 13 points each. Washington, Voitot, Mouwens and Floashade Akinde each scored in double digits in a win for the Bearcats.
The Hawks will close out the 2010-11 season and look to get above .500 in conference play when they take on the Cardinals of York College in a makeup game on February 14 in Jamaica, NY at 6:00 pm.
