New York, NY – On Saturday, February 19, the women's basketball team took on the Lightning of Lehman College in the quarterfinal round of the 2011 CUNYAC/Con Edison Basketball Tournament. Hunter couldn't get into any sort of rhythm and was only able to shoot 27.5 percent from the field as they found themselves in an early 22 point deficit by halftime. Unfortunately, the hole would deepen as Lehman pressed on and would advance to the next round. With the loss, Hunter caps their season 9-16, 6-7 in conference play.
As the contest began, it was the Lightning that dominated from the tip off, putting the pressure on early with a 18-4 run in the first 6:07 of the game. Freshman Marta Banach accounted for seven of Hunter's 20 first half points and grabbed four rebounds while fellow freshmen standouts Kristen Markoe and Nicole Lenard were held to a combine ten points on three of 13 from the field. They struggled from behind the arc as well, connecting on just two of ten attempts as they headed into halftime down by 22.
Markoe and Shamel Jaime accounted for the first four points for the Hawks in the second half, but the team felt the defensive pressure put on by Lehman as they were held to just those two baskets in the first 5:45 while their counter parts netted 26. The Struggles continued for Hunter, who, due to injuries, was only able to play with seven girls. Although they improved their shooting percentage to just over 30, it was just not enough as the Lightning would roll through the end of the game, eventually reaching the century mark as the Hawks posted just 50 points in the loss.
Markoe led the Hawks with 18 points while Jaime and Lenard chipped in with 10 points a piece. Louvinia Hayes accounted for 35 of Lehman's points and nine rebounds while four of her other teammates all scored in double digits.
