Hawks Bit by Bloodhounds, Fall to John Jay

New York, NY - On Wednesday night, February 2nd, the women's basketball team played host to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College in a conference matchup. After giving up the lead early on, the Hawks fought hard to come back.   However, despite cutting into the Bloodhound's game high lead of 14, the Hawks were unable to come out on top, falling 65-54. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 7-13, 5-4 in the CUNYAC while John Jay advances 10-11, 7-3 in the CUNYAC.

At 18:52, a 3-pointer by Jessica Lirio put the Bloodhounds on the board first, but Hawks responded with a three-pointer by sophomore Johanna Keilwitz to tie. The Hawks then struggled offensively as the bloodhounds jumped out to a 14 point lead. After a Hunter scoring drought of over 2 minutes, Freshman Nicole Lenard put the Hawks back on the board with a layup at 11:18 remaining in the first half.  At the end of the half, the Hawks trailed the Bloodhounds by 10, 38-28.

A layup by Freshman Nicole Lenard pulled the Hawks to within 8 to start the second half.  Despite cutting the Bloodhound lead  down to 7, the Hawks gradually faded as the Bloodhounds again lead by as many as 14 points with less than a minute remaining in the game.  Despite only outscoring the Hawks by 1 point in the second half, the bloodhounds came away with the65-54 victory.

Keilwitz and 4-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Kristen Markoe led the Hawks with 17 points and 16 points respectively. Markoe also lead the team in rebounds, grabbing 14 boards while Marta Banach finished the night with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hawks return to action on Friday, February 4 when they play host to the Panthers of Purchase College in a non-conference match-up. The game is scheduled to start at 6 pm.
