Hawks Stopped by Lehman

Box Score

BRONX, NY -On Monday night, February 7, the women's basketball team took on the Lightning of Lehman College in their tenth conference game of the season. Despite a combine 40 point effort by the freshman duo of Nicole Lenard and Kristen Markoe, the Lightning proved to be too much to handle as they took the lead late in the first half and never looked back, taking the 68-54 win. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 8-14, 5-5 CUNYAC while Lehman advances to 14-9, 8-4 CUNYAC.

The Lightning got on the board first on a jumper by Amanda De La Cruz, but Markoe responded with back to back three pointers to make it a 6-2 game. Over the next 7:37, the Hawks strung together a 15-4 run, sparked by a Lenard layup, and capped with a three pointer by Johanna Keilwitz. However, in the remaining 10 minutes, Hunter fell out of rhythm and fell victim to a 24-2 run that closed out the first half, falling behind 32-23.

Lenard finally broke the scoring drought at the 17:18 mark when she connected on a jumper in an effort to light a spark under her team, but nothing seemed to fall into place for the Hawks who continued to struggle from behind the arc as they shot just one for six. Lehman, on the strength of Louvinia Hayes' 30 points and Jaleesa Gordon's 23, powered away, extending their lead to as much as 18 and putting the game out of reach early in the second half.

Lenard led the Hawks with 21 points and 11 rebounds while Markoe chipped in with 19 points and 9 rebounds. Johanna Keilwitz added nine points while senior Christina Baker grabbed seven boards.

The Hawks return to action on Wednesday, February 9 when they host the Beavers of CCNY in the first of their final three games of the regular season. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
