JAMAICA, NY - The Hunter College women's tennis team defeated York College 7-1 to win their opening match of the 2011-12 season.
Seniors
Jennifer Kraham and
Olga Chagin led the way for the Hawks, as five freshmen made their collegiate competition debut.
Kraham took first singles (6-1, 6-1), followed by
Flavia Guidi (6-0, 6-1) in the second flight.
Stephanie Ahwireng led a hard-fought third flight match (6-3, 5-6) that had to be stopped due to darkness.
Gina Yeo fought back to win fourth singles via tiebreaker (3-6, 6-1, 7-4). Although Chagin was defeated in the fifth flight (5-7, 0-6),
Caroline Kaleda came from behind to win the final flight by tiebreaker (3-6, 7-6, 7-5)
The Hawks opened the match by sweeping doubles play. Kraham and Chagin teamed up to win first doubles (8-2). Guidi and Ahwireng teamed up to narrowly win the second doubles (8-6), while Yeo and
Elizabeth Serrano won the third flight via a 9-8 tiebreaker.
Hunter (1-0, 1-0 CUNYAC) will head to the Bronx to face Lehman College on September 19th at 4:00pm.
