Hawks Comeback Effort Falls Short in 61-52 Defeat Against NYU

NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter College women's basketball team's comeback effort fell short tonight as the Hawks suffered a 61-52 setback against the visiting Violets of New York University in the Hunter Sportsplex.

The Hawks drop to 4-8 on the year while the Violets improve to 9-3 in non-conference action.
 
Hunter was led by sophomore Kristen Markoe who finished the game with 14 points, four assists and six boards while Megan McKenna chipped in 10 points in addition to pulling in six rebounds. Reigning CUNYAC/Con Edison Rookie of the Week and HC freshman Shatira Hamlet added eight points.
 
The Violets commanded early in the second, going on a 10-2 run in the first 5:50 minutes of the game to take a commanding 13 point lead (41-28). Hunter steadily chipped away however and a solid three-point play from Markoe cut the Violets' lead to just one point (49-48) with 7:22 left to play. Unfortunately, the Hawks ran into foul trouble late as nine of the Violets' final 13 points came in the form of free throws as NYU moved ahead to claim tonight's victory, 61-52.  
 
NYU took control of the game early, jumping out to an eight point lead (14-6) at the 14:46 mark but the half but the Hawks battled back, cutting the Violets' lead to four points on two occasions. When NYU established a nine-point lead (25-16) with 8:32 left to play, Hunter utilized a 10-6 run to close out the stanza, giving the Violets a 31-26 advantage at the break.
 
Hunter ended the game shooting 64% from the charity stripe but were just 32% in the field. The Hawks' loss was compounded by NYU's ability to capitalize on turnovers, which they converted for 18 points.


Hunter returns to action this Saturday, January 14 when they travel to face CUNYAC opponent Brooklyn College. Tip-off is set for 12:30pm.
