Bulldogs Outlast Hawks, 55-47

BROOKLYN, NY - The CUNYAC division leading Hunter College and Brooklyn College women's basketball teams entered Saturday's match up as the last two unbeaten teams in conference play however despite a valiant effort, the Hawks dropped the decision, 55-47 in the West Quad Center on Saturday afternoon.

Hunter falls to 4-9 overall and 3-1 in the CUNYAC, slipping into second place in the North Division standings while Brooklyn improves to 10-5 and 4-0 in conference for sole possession atop the South Division.

Alease Vaughan led the Hawks with 14 points and eight boards while Megan McKenna scored 13, adding eight rebounds as well.

The Hawks got off to a slower start than expected as Brooklyn leapt out to a 9-0 lead with 16:47 left to play. Hunter's offense got rolling and the Hawks steadily chipped away to even things at 13-13 on a Megan McKenna jumper with 5:22 left in the half. Despite closing the gap, the Bulldogs closed the half on a 7-0 run to take a 23-16 lead into the lockerroom.

The home team came out of the locker room energized as the Bulldogs' offense expanded the lead to a game-high 16 points (39-23) with 14:47 left to play. The Hawks were not discouraged however, as Hunter went on a 17-8 run of its own across the next 11:18 to cut the Bulldogs lead to seven but it was too late. A quick layup and a costly Hunter turnover was converted into a five point swing as Charnelle St. Laurent connected on the long distance jumped to put the Bulldogs back in front by 12 with 2:34 left to go. Following another Brooklyn layup, Kristen Markoe knocked down a jumper and then a three-pointer to trim the deficit back down to nine (55-45). Unfortunately, time was not on the Hawks' side as the Bulldogs were able to hold on for this afternoon's victory.

The Hawks struggled from the field, shooting just 25% but did convert 6-8 free throws attempted to finish 75% from the charity stripe.

The Hawks will look to rebound this Monday, January 16 when they travel to Ponoma, NJ to take on Richard Stockton College at 7pm.
