POMONA, NJ - The Hunter College women's basketball team saw five players finish in double figures but Richard Stockton matched the Hawks' offensive output and managed to eke out an 89-85 win on Monday evening.
Kristen Markoe led the Hawks with 19 points and eight rebounds while
Nicole Lenard and
Alease Vaughan each tallied 14.
Shatira Hamlet added 12 and
Johanna Keilwitz added 11 to close out the five players in double digits tonight.
Hunter moves to 4-10 on the year while Stockton improves to 11-4 in non-conference competition with its victory.
Stockton trailed 43-39 at the half as
Shatira Hamlet scored 10 of her 12 points to lead Hunter. Then the Ospreys led by 31-24 with 7:24 remaining before the Hawks used a 14-2 run to take the lead and close out the half in front.
The second half saw Stockton come back from six points down with 13:55 left to take a 67-65 lead on a three-point play by LaTonya Oliver at the nine-minute mark. The Ospreys then opened up a five-point lead that the Hawks erased by outscoring Stockton 17-9 as Markoe's hot hand was good for 11 points in a six-minute span to spark the Hawks to an 84-81 edge with 2:15 to play.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Ospreys battled back one last time to seal the win as Aliyah Nelson sank two free throws followed by a jumper that gave Stockton the lead for good at 85-84 with 1:15 to play. Oliver and Aspen Price-Perry each added two points apiece to extend the lead to 89-84 while Markoe tallied a free throw to account for tonight's final, 89-85.
Hunter shot an impressive 45% from the field and was 50% from behind the arc, connecting on 10-20 attempts.
The Hawks return to CUNYAC action this Wednesday, January 18 as they welcome Medgar Evers to the Sportsplex. Game time is scheduled for 5 pm.
