BROOKLYN, NY - The Hunter College women's basketball team warded off a late comeback attempt from NYU-Poly, prevailing over the Lady Jays, 53-47 at Jacobs Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks improve to 6-10 with the victory while the Lady Jays fall to 6-10 with the loss.
Megan McKenna and
Nicole Lenard each finished with 10 points apiece to guide the Hawks offensively. As a squad, Hunter shot just 34% from the field and and 25% from three-point range.
Despite enabling NYU-Poly to jump out ot 12-2 lead to open the contest, Hunter battled back, closing the half on a 9-4 run to take an 11-point lead into the break, ahead 31-20. NYU-Poly would rally in the second half, trimming the Hawks' lead to just a point (45-44) with 6:21 left to play. But the Hawk defense played stingy, holding the Lady Jays scoreless in the final mintues of the game while the Hawks rattled off five points to escape with the victory.
Hunter struggled shooting but forced 14 Lady Jay turnovers and picked up eight steals in tonight's victory. The Hawks held NYU-Poly to 29% shooting from the field.
The Hawks are back in action this Monday, January 23 when Hunter travels to Newburgh, NY to take on Mount Saint Mary College at 7pm.
