Hawks Blow Past Cardinals, 77-38

NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter College women's basketball team used a well-rounded team performance to top the visiting York College Cardinals, 77-38 at the Hunter Sportsplex on Wednesday evening.

The Hawks improve to 7-11 overall and 5-1 CUNYAC while the Cardinals fall to 1-16 and 1-5 in conference play.

In all, the Hawks saw three players finish in double digits as Megan McKenna led all scorers with 19 points, adding seven pounds while Shatira Hamlet chipped in with 12. Kristen Markoe registered a double-double, tallying 11 points and 10 boards while Alease Vaughan led the Hawks with 12 boards.

Hunter leapt out to a 33-22 first half lead behind a solid performance from McKenna who led all scorers with 13 points in the stanza. The Hawks capitalized on 14 Cardinal turnovers, converting them into 15 points. Hunter led by as many as 14 points (25-11) at the 6:52 mark but three-point shooting from York enabled the Cardinals to hang as Shadae Rice knocked down the second three-pointer of the half down to trim the Hawks' lead to just 10 (31-21) with 1:51 left to play.

The Hawks kept the offensive pressure high in the second, and outscored the Cardinals 44-16 while shooting an impressive 58.8% in the half. Hunter kept the Cardinals off balanced all game long, limiting York to just 20% shooting from the field and 12.5% from three-point range.

Ishonda McFarland led the Cardinals with 10 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.

Hunter will continue CUNYAC play this Friday, January 27 when the Hawks play host to College of Staten Island at 5pm.
