FLUSHING, NY - For the 23rd consecutive year, the women's tennis team has reached the finals of the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Championship by defeating the #4 seed Baruch College with a score 5-3 this past Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY.  The Hawks go on to play the College of Staten Island on Wednesday, October 24th at 5pm.

The Hawks took an early advantage after doubles play, as they took two of the three doubles matches.  Juniors Jane Selegean and Shena Joseph defeated Baruch's Patricia Correria and Amandine Le Goupil-Maier 8-4 at first doubles. Sophomore Stephanie Ahwireng and freshman Angelina Usherenko breezed by the Bearcat team of Anna Komar and Elizavette Glotova 8-3, giving the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.  The Hawk team of sophomores Caroline Kaleda and Beth Chapnick battle back and forth at second doubles but ultimately fell 8-6 to Baruch's Jennifer Mukofsky and Lisa Kurner.

In singles play, Komar defeated Kaleda in the fourth flight 6-3, 6-2 to tie the score up 2-2.  Soon after, Mukofsky beat sophomore Gina Yeo with an identical score of 6-3, 6-2 to give Baruch a 3-2 edge.  The Bearcats just needed two more wins to go on to the finals.  Usherenko then dominated in the sixth flight 6-1, 6-1 to tie up the score 3-3 for the Hawks.  Selgeean finished off Correria 7-5, 6-3 in first singles, while Stephanie Ahwireng clinched the match for Hunter in the fifth flight, getting the best of Baruch's Kurner 6-4, 6-4.

"I'm very happy the way the girls played today," says head coach Frances Ferdinand. "Baruch is a great team, and we had to fight hard to get the win.  It was an intense match but there was good tennis all around and now we look to get our 13th consecutive title on Wednesday."

The Hawks now play the Dolphins of CSI in the finals, which will be held on Wednesday, October 24th at the USTA National Tennis Center.  The match is set for a 5:00pm start.
