Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – On Friday, November 30, the women's basketball team traveled upstate for a non-conference matchup against the Brewers of Vassar College. The Hawks fell behind early on in the game and managed just 18 points in the first half and were unable to bridge the gap in the second, dropping the game by a score of 76-47. With the loss, Hunter slips to 1-4, 1-1 CUNYAC while Vassar improves to 4-0.
Nicole Lenard and Erika Dejesus led the scoring attack for Hunter with a combine 29 points with Lenard owning 19 of them.
Shatira Hamlet,
Dimitra Krissi Thomopoulos, Kristen Sells and
Carolyn Kweon all combined to score 18. The Hawks struggled in the first, knocking down just seven jumpers, but bounced back and shot .500 from the field, going 11-22.
Cyndi Matsuoka led the way for Vassar with a game high 18 points while teammates Caitlin Drakeley and Nyah Berg each chipped in with 10 points apiece. As a team, the Brewers shot .444 from the field, sinking 32 shots on 77 attempts.
Vassar got on the board first with a game opening layup by Colleen O'Connell, but Dejesus answered the hosts scoring on two occasions to keep the Hawks in it at 4-4. Hunter found themselves down by four at the 10:44 mark, but would give up six unanswered points to fall behind by 10. The deficit would grow to 14 at 32-18 to close out the first half.
Hamlet opened the second with a made layup to spark a 7-2 run in the opening 2:40 to expand the gap. Unable to get close enough to make a run, the Purple and Gold were held to just four points in the final 4:14, ultimately falling 76-47.
The women's basketball team takes the floor once again on Tuesday night, December 4 when they host Mount Saint Mary in a non-conference contest. Tipoff is scheduled for a 5:30 pm start.
