FARMINGDALE, NY – The Hunter College women's basketball team trailed by 11 points with just over five minutes left to play in yesterday's game against the Farmingdale State College Rams but remained composed, orchestrating the comeback to top the Rams, 63-60 on the road Tuesday evening.
Hunter closed out the regular non-conference season 12-13 while the Rams dropped to 13-8 with the loss.
Freshman
Shatira Hamlet was outstanding in the victory, matching her career and season-high point tally with 19 while
Kristen Markoe added 17 and
Erika DeJesus added a season-high 10 to help the Hawks offensively.
With 5:33 left to play in the second half, the Hawks found themselves down by 11 points (58-47). Hunter remained composed and utilized a true team effort to spark a 16-2 run. Trailing by six, Hamlet connected on a layup at 3:39 then
Megan McKenna's put-back layup at 2:38 closed the gap to four (58-54).
A pair of missed free throws from Farmingdale at 1:52 enabled
Johanna Keilwitz to connect on a jumper at 1:40 before a fastbreak layup from DeJesus at 1:13 tied the game up at 58-58. A layup from Hamlet put the Hawks ahead but Farmingdale knotted the game up at 60-all with 17 seconds to go.
With time winding down Hamlet paced down the court on a fast break, successfully converting a three-point play on a layup to put the Hawks ahead, 63-60. The Rams had two opportunities to tie the contest but each of its 3-point attempts fell short as the Hawks held on for the victory.
The Hawks led by as many as eight points early in the first half before Farmingdale went on a 13-4 run to knot the game at 17-17 with 5:53 to go. The Hawks would regain the lead however, closing the frame on an 11-6 run to take a 28-23 advantage into the break.
Jeanette Zubizarreta scored 15 points to lead the Rams.

th annual CUNYAC/Con Edison Tournament at home this Sunday, February 19 as they host the John Jay Bloodhounds in the Sportsplex at 2pm.
