Hawks Dominate in Second; Defeat Beavers, 62-48

BOX SCORE

NEW YORK, NY - A solid second half at the charity stripe propelled the Hunter College women's basketball team to victory as the Hawks defeated the City College of New York Beavers, 62-48 at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Hawks improve to 11-12 overall and 9-2 in the conference to remain in first place atop the north division standings. The Beavers fall to 4-20 overall and 2-9 in the CUNYAC.

Alease Vaughan led the Hawks as she earned a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 boards while Kristen Markoe finished with nine points and nine rebounds to help the squad to victory.

Despite shooting woes early, the Hawks connected on 13-30 attempts in the second for a 43.3% shooting percentage to close out the frame. Defensively, the Hawks forced 17 Beaver turnovers and stole the ball ten times en route to scoring 13 points off of turnovers.

Hunter led by just three points at the break, 26-23 as the Beavers erased an early eight-point lead to make it a close affair. The Hawks came out energized in the second stanza, opening the first three minutes of play on a 9-5 run to take a 35-27 lead with 17:00 to play. The Beavers hung around though and cut the Hawks' lead to four points (37-33) on a big three-pointer at 14:20 but the Hawks would push ahead once more.

After trading buckets for six minutes, CCNY cut Hunter's lead back to six points (42-36) with just over ten minutes to play but couldn't manage much more. The Beavers attempted to foul down the stretch but the Hawks--who finished the night shooting 76.2% from the charity stripe, knocked down nine free throws in the final 14 points of the game to claim the 62-48 victory.

Hunter will travel to face off with divisional rival Baruch College on Saturday, February 11th at 2pm in the final regular season CUNYAC matchup.
