Women's Basketball Slips by Mt. St. Vincent

A late surge in the second half lifts Hunter past the Dolphins

BOX SCORE

Riverdale, NY – The women's basketball team traveled up to Mt. St. Vincent College this past Monday night in a non-conference game.  After a Hawks late surge in the second half, they were able to get past the Dolphins, 55-52.  With the win, the Hawks improve to 5-11, while Mt. St. Vincent drop to 5-11.

The Hawks started out slow, with the Dolphins having a 15-2 run, grabbing a 23-9 lead at the 9:14 mark.  Hunter fought back, cutting the Dolphins deficit to six at the half, down only 28-22.

The second half proved better for the Hawks, as the Dolphins didn't get on the board until 13:38 with a free-throw.  Hunter took full advantage of that, going on an 18-2 run to build their lead to 10 with 11:16 left in regulation.  The Dolphins attempt of a comeback with a furious 17-9 run in the finals minutes was not enough to overcome the Hawks, who walked away with a 55-52 victory.

Mount Saint Vincent held Hunter to 30.6-percent shooting in the game, but the Hawks outscored the Dolphins by six from the free-throw line and by seven in second chance opportunities. The Hawks secured 23 offensive rebounds in the game and outrebounded the Dolphins 55-42 overall.

Nicole Lenard led the visitors with a game-high 19 points on the strength of 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. DeJesus netted 16 points, while Dimitra Krissi  Thomopoulos had a strong night with seven points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Wednesday, January 23 when they travel downtown for a CUNYAC showdown between rivals Baruch College at 5:30 pm. You can follow along with the game through Live Stats which can be found here.
