New York, N.Y. – The women's basketball team played host to the Bloodhounds of John Jay last night in their second meeting of the season. The first time these two teams met earlier in December, the Bloodhounds won 61-49. This time the Hawks would take the Bloodhounds into overtime defeating them there in dramatic fashion, 62-59. With the win, the Hawks improve to 8-12, 7-5 CUNYAC while the Bloodhounds drop to 11-10, 8-4 CUNYAC.
The Hawks were led by junior
Nicole Lenard, who scored a game-high of 22 points with nine boards, two assists, and three steals. Sophomore Dimitra Thomopoulos was right behind her with 18 points and eight rebounds. Junior Kristen Sells had a double-double for the night and her first for the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while also having four steals and three assists. Freshman
Ayanna Hudson added a team-high of 12 rebounds, while freshman
Joey Chan added nine rebounds.
John Jay was led by Victoria Story, with 19 points and nine rebounds, and also Jamecia Forsythe who had 19 boards.
The Hawks trailed for nearly the entire game and were down by as much as 17 points with 13:05 left in the second half. Over the next eight minutes however, the Hawks outscored John Jay 17-3 to pull within three with just over five minutes to play. John Jay never lost their lead, and stayed in front until just six seconds remained when a good free throw by
Nicole Lenard tied the score at 56-56, sending the game into overtime.
In the extra session, John Jay did not connect on a field goal attempt and went 3-for-6 from the free throw line. The Hawks went 2-for-6 from the floor and 2-for-4 from the charity stripe to outlast the Bloodhounds and even the two-game series this season.
Both teams played spectacular defense keeping each other under thirty percent shooting from the field. The Bloodhounds shot 20-for-68 from the floor (29.4 percent), while Hunter made 20-of-73 (27.4 percent).
