Women's Basketball Defeats Wheelock in Opening Game

New York, N.Y. -The Hunter College women's basketball team kicked off the 2013-14 season Friday night with a 75-54 victory over the Wheelock College Wildcats in the 2013 Women's Basketball Tip-off Tournament.

The Hawks (1-0) were led by senior Kristen Markoe who scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds. Senior Kristin Sells chipped in with 13 points and junior Ayanna Hudson tallied 12 rebounds.

The Hawks led 34-21 at the half and used defensive pressure to steadily extend their lead and with just over five minutes remaining the lead had grown to 31. The Hawks defense pressured the Wildcats all night forcing 27 turnovers.

The Wildcats (0-1) were led by freshman Michelle Woods who also tallied a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

The Hawks play Fairleigh Dickenson – Florham Devils in the championship game. Tip-off is 3:00pm. The Wildcats will play St. Joseph's College in the consolation game at 1:00 pm.
