QUEENS, NY - The #1 seed Hunter women's tennis team began their quest for the programs 14 CUNYAC title in the last 15 years on Sunday. The Hawks took on the #4 seed Baruch Bearcats and earned a 5-3 victory, moving them ahead to Wednesday's CUNYAC Championship against College of Staten Island.
The Hawks found themselves behind 2-1 after the doubles competition, with the #2 pair of
Angelina Usherenko and
Sara Beck earning the lone Hawk victory with an 8-5 win.
The Hawks staged a tremendous comeback in the singles competition. #1 Allie Jackson-Hing defeated
Abigail Rojas 6-0, 6-1 to give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead. Then #2 singles and CUNYAC Rookie of the Year
Julia Vranas beat Hayley Bester 6-2, 6-0 then #3 singles,
Janani Bavanandan evened the match 3-3 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dzhessika Bishenkevi. #6 singles and second Team All-Star
Sara Beck would give the Hawks a 4-3 lead with her 6-2, 6-1 victory over Jessica Zukhovich. #5 singles would be the next match to finish up, with
Paulina Szegda clinching the 5-3 Hawk victory with her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Helen Lee. First Team All-Star
Angelina Usherenko was ahead in the #4 flight 6-2, 3-1 when Szegda finished her match giving the Hawks the necessary five points needed to advance.
The Hawks move on the CUNYAC Championship where they will face CSI, the team that ended the Hawks year last season. In September, the Hawks defeated the Dolphins 7-2, both teams lost only one CUNYAC match during the season. The match is set to begin at 4pm at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, Queens.
