BOX SCORE NEW YORK, NY – The Hunter women's volleyball team took on the US Merchant Marine Academy Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup at the Hunter College Sportsplex. The Hawks came away with a 3-0 sweep of the Mariners to improve their record to 9-12.
The Hawks won by the scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-17.
The first set was back and forth throughout the first half. With the Hawks up 12-10, USMMA rattled off seven straight points to take a 17-12. Head coach
Val Lang called a timeout to stop the Mariners momentum and it paid off. The Hawks scored the next eight points to take a 20-17 lead. They closed out the set by taking advantage of the Mariners attacking errors and excellent attacking net play by
Karolina Gajda and defensive net play by
Lucia Stosic.
The second set was even closer than the first, with no team being able to open a lead larger than three points. The Hawks continued their aggressive play at the net totaling 12 kills for the set. With the set tied 22-22, the Hawks were able to use their strong net play to put the set away. Stosic smashed home a kill to make it 23-22 and then she was a part of back-to-back blocks to seal the 25-22 set win.
The third set the Hawks were able to continue their net play domination, totaling 17 kills in the set. The Mariners were able to take a 1-0 lead on the first point but were never able to take the lead again the entire set.
Stosic finished the game with a game-high 11 kills, two solo blocks and three block assists, while hitting .474%.
Julia Connolly and
Karolina Gajda each smashed nine kills and each had a block assist.
Kristine Ciurcina dished out 35 assists.
The Hawks return to action Saturday when they travel to Rowan University to take part in a Tri-Match. The Hawks are scheduled to take on Centenary College, Kenyon College and Penn State Abington University.
